The three Yishuvs, returns to Israel, in the late 19th and early 20th century were a great support for the movement to gain a homeland for the Jewish people.
The post-WWI era saw increased Arab resistance to the formation of Israel exacerbated by Britain's conflicting promises to both peoples.
Israel was abandoned by the British ending the Mandatory Palestine mandate but managed to unilaterally declare themselves a state in 1948.
